Oscar Brooks, 89, former city manager, funeral is Friday

Oscar Dewey Brooks, 89, Goodlettsville's first city manager died Tuesday, September 5, 2006.  His funeral is Friday, September 8, at 11 a.m. at Cole & Garrett Funeral Home in Goodlettsville(615-859-5231).

Brooks graduated as class president in 1936 from Goodlettsville High School.  He was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II.  After the service, he owned Brooks Mens Store from 1952 to 1982.  He was Goodlettsville's first city manager, serving from 1958 to 1963.  He was an active member of Goodlettsville Sourthern Methodist Church. 

He is survived by his wif of 61 years, Louise Ward Brooks; three sons, Jim (Louise) Brooks, Tom (Donna) Brooks, and David (Tracy) Brooks; seven grandchildren, Robert (Traci), Jessica, Jacob, Elliot, Abby, Anna, and Callee; and one great-grandchild, Lauren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 Thursday at Cole and Garrett.  Funeral services are 11 a.m. Friday, September 8, at the funeral home with Dr. Ronald Carrier officiating. 

Honorary pallbearers are members of Goodlettsville Southern Methodist Church.  Pallbearers are Rick Key, don Gray, Doug Mabry, Jim Achuff, Johnny Claud Garrett, Jerry Garrett, Welborn Trotter, Steve Brubbs, Lawrence Brooks, and David Wilson.  Interment is at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.  Cole & Garrett Funeral Home. 615-859-5231

Peggy Smallwood formerly of Goodlettsville dies in Mississippi

Margaret Binkley Smallwood of New Albany, Mississippi, formerly of Goodlettsville, known to family and friends as "Peggy", age 66, died Wednesday, September 6, 2006, at her home after an extended illness. She was a housewife and retired schoolteacher.

She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in New Albany, where she served as Chairman of the Official Board, Council on Ministries and Missions Committee. She taught Sunday school, and helped found Camp Sonshine, where she volunteered for years. She co-founded the Union County Literacy Council, where she served as president and tutor. Her civic activities included being a local and national officer of Junior Auxiliary, a board member of Boys & Girls Club and volunteer with the Good Samaritan Center. She was a longtime member of the New Century Club and Junta Club.

Survivors include her husband, W. C. "Bill" Smallwood, Jr., of New Albany; her son, Bill Smallwood III, his wife, Mary Beth, and their sons, Carter and Sam, all of Tupelo; her mother, Elizabeth Binkley, and sisters, Pat Clark and Pam Garrett, all of Goodlettsville; her brother, Ed Binkley, and his wife, Sherry, of Oviedo, Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lee Mason Binkley, of Goodlettsville. Visitation will be on Friday, September 8, 2006, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, New Albany, with the funeral to follow at 1 p.m. at the church.
